TMJ Calgary

TMJ or Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) refers to a number of conditions related to the jaw joints. The symptoms can include jaw pain, facial pain, clicking or cracking in the jaw joints, locking, limited range of movement, headaches, neck or shoulder pain.

TMJ disorders can be mild, but also can lead to more severe, even debilitating pain. If you are suffering from the disorder, you should seek evaluation and treatment. Inline Orthodontics can help! Our specialist Dr. Trpkova can examine you, and after establishing the diagnosis, can help reduce your symptoms, as well as help you manage the disorder.

TMJ disorders are sometimes self limiting, but often will not get better without treatment. You should look out for symptoms, which can include grinding noises when moving the jaw, clicking noises when chewing, limited jaw movement, pain or swelling in your face and joints, and pain in your jaw when talking or chewing, just to name a few examples. These signs may indicate that you have TMJ disorder, and if you are concerned, do not hesitate to reach out to us for help.

Different treatment options are available, and the appropriate one will be selected based on your condition. A night guard may be recommended to help protect the muscles, teeth, and jaw joints. If an unhealthy bite is causing the disorder, you may need to consider orthodontic treatment. Neuromodulators (Botox) can be used to reduce excessive muscle contractions. Additional treatments such as physical therapy, medications, relaxation therapy may also be needed.
