Aligners (Invisalign) or Braces For Kids and Teens

When it comes to correcting smiles, while many times it is for cosmetic reasons, correcting the bite and straightening teeth can have many health benefits.

There are two main orthodontic “tools” used: braces and aligners (Invisalign). What is the difference between the two, and which is best for kids and teens?

Braces

Traditional braces feature brackets cemented to the teeth and held in line by a metal wire. The brackets are traditionally made from metal. Teeth gradually shift 24 hours out of the day, and your orthodontist will change the wire and guide the teeth every number of weeks to keep the correcting process moving along. Braces are on a patient’s teeth for anywhere between16 months to two years, depending on the amount of work your child needs done. Braces can sometimes poke the inside of your mouth, or they can come off if biting into hard or chewy foods.  More appointments are needed in the clinic if that happens, called special visits.

Aligners (Invisalign)

Aligners are completely different in appearance from traditional braces. The metal brackets are replaced by multiple sets of clear teeth trays. Your orthodontist will design and create the aligners to straighten the teeth, gradually shifting them each time a new tray is introduced. The entire process can be completed in about a year to a year and a half. Aligners are a great option for older teens as well who are worried about the cosmetic appearance of traditional braces. Do not be concerned about them wearing the aligners properly. In our experience, the majority of children and teens do a great job! The big plus about aligners is that both brushing and flossing are very easy, making good oral health seamless.

Conclusion
